There's no real puzzle as to the motivation behind EA Mobile's latest game release. Tetris has pretty much set up home in the mobile game download charts over the last couple of years, and therefore any new variant is virtually guaranteed a prime location.
So is Tetris Mania merely a brand extension to keep the coins dropping in? Well, to an extent, 'Doh!' But at least the game boasts three new modes to put a fresh spin on the eternally rotating blocks.
Sticky mode is perhaps the most intriguing of the trio. It enables players to connect similarly coloured blocks to create whole new shapes to clear the rows more rapidly.
Cascade mode also promises to get things moving faster, adding more realistic gravity to the mix with the result that unsupported blocks fall into place and trigger an avalanche of points.
Finally, the potentially explosive Fusion mode requires you to connect a particularly infectious block to its peers in order to blast to the next screen.
The animations and sound have received a fresh lick of paint too, but will it be enough to secure Tetris Mania the status of new kid on the block? Our review will be dropping into place shortly, so we'll soon find out.
