Need for Speed™ Shift is an award-winning authentic racing game that combines the true driver’s experience with real-world physics, pixel-perfect car models, and a wide range of authentic race tracks. Need for Speed SHIFT takes players in a different direction to create a simulation experience that replicates the true feeling of driving high-end performance cars.

Players are thrust into the loud, visceral, intense, athletic experience of racing a car on the edge of control from the driver’s perspective through the combination of perception based G-forces, the hyper reality of the pit view, and the brutal experience of a first person crash dynamic. Need for Speed SHIFT features an accurate, accessible physics-based driving model that allows you to feel every impact, every change of track surface and every last bit of grip as you push yourself to the edge.

The all-new driver profile is the ultimate extension of the true driver’s experience. This system gives each player a unique persona based on a player’s driving skill and style - aggressive or precise. Driver profile impacts how a player unlocks cars, overall career
progression and online matchmaking. In Need for Speed SHIFT, how you drive is who you are behind the wheel.

Need for Speed SHIFT is being developed by Slightly Mad Studios in collaboration with Black Box and senior vice president Patrick Soderlund at EA Games Europe. Slightly Mad Studios includes developers and designers that worked on the critically acclaimed games GT Legends and GTR 2.

    Battleblocks

    Casual gaming destroys worlds

There's a new era in mobile gaming that is slowly emerging. I'm guessing it's the developers attempts to entice the more hardcore gamers into mobile. Puzzle Quest and Samurai Puzzle Battle both successfully mixed RPG storytelling with Bejewelled-esque casual gaming. Hands On are following up with a Tetris variant set in outer space.

The hero of piece is Ogo, a warmongering destructive robot that kills planets wherever he lands; a kind of antithesis to Wall-E. Ogo has ended up on the wrong planet and the gods try to destroy Ogo by throwing tetrimo style blocks on him (although there is a little twist at the end and you have a choice of endings). Rather than making horizontal lines, Ogo's quest is to match 5 or more blocks to make them disappear. It sounds a tougher task than it actually is, the blocks that fall down are usually of the same colour or a mix of two at most. Getting a decent start is key to the games and quite frankly it doesn't get that hard until the last few levels.

The game is split into 6 worlds where you battle through 7 levels culminating in a boss god battle. Two big inspirations for the game designers seem to be Lumines and Tetris Mania. The basic block matching concept is constant throughout the game but the levels do have their own quirks. Some will just ask you to survive for a set time and others will be completed when you match 20 blocks of a specific colour. Your level progress is shown with the bar on the top right. The bar on the top left indicates when the next lightning strike will come. For some levels, any matched blocks will stay on the screen until the lightning arrives and blasts them away. The gameplay makes it tough to work in some combos and there's generally very little tactics involved.

The graphics in the game are a bit of a mixed bag. The menu screen and level select screen of the planet and its lands are beautifully drawn. This beauty isn't carried across to the main game. The main graphics aren't bad but just nothing spectacular on the N81. The controls are pretty straight forward; 2 rotates the falling blocks, 8 is a fast drop and 4 and 6 do what you expect. Do take note of the fluidness of moving the blocks side to side (a small point but one that probably makes the developers very proud).

They are also no doubt proud of all the special effects and power ups that they have crammed in. There are half a dozen different types of bombs and then another set of collectible power-ups. Add to that your secret weapon of block eating moles and the occasional wrath of a god, you could find yourself playing more with the power-ups than the standard blocks. This is ultimately the trouble with the game. It’s all a little too easy. The levels are purposefully long, but the difficulty never really increases. The falling blocks, while having awkward shapes, are generally monochromatic and therefore disappear pretty easily. Battle Blocks is a game full of great ideas but just maybe a few too many of them.
